Mr Cooper sulmits three alterative designs. A and B
are for a roof of concrete on Trough-plates, supported on fron
girders and masonry pillars. C. is for a roof of the ordinary
construction, masonry and brick-work arches on stone pillars.
Design A. differs from E in that a portion of the roof is
converted into a filter-bed. Now it appears from Mr Cooper's Report
that the main object of augmenting the filtration area is to provide
means of dealing with the unusually turbid water which flows into
the great Tytam Reservoir, during heavy rain. A similar difficulty
was experienced at the Pokefoclam Works, The difficulty has, in
this case, been to a great ext nt overcome without any extension of
filtration area. It was observed that the mountain streams were
exceedingly turbid during rain, but when it ceased they rapidly
became clear, though they continued to afford a large supply of waste
for many days after the cessation of heavy rain.
The water in the Reservoir on the other hand remained tur --
bid for many days. A pipe was laid intercepting the principal feed-
ers,
and carrying their waters to the conduit, and so to the filter- beds without mixing with the water in the Reservoir, which thus had time to subside. Following out this principle several mountain streams between the Reservoir and the town which were found to give

Mr Cooper has commenced similar operations in connection with the Tytam works, by intercepting certain streams between the Reservoir and the town, and he reports favorably of the results. also reports that he is preparing a plan for intercepting the stream which enter the Tytam Reservoir, and gives his opinion that when this
